Obsession of cutting grass too short creates many of the problems with lawns that homeowners worry about, for example moss, broad leaf weeds and sometimes grubs.
Cutting the lawn too short stresses the plant including the roots which are not visible. Then we apply fertiliser and moss control to a stressed lawn in the hope that it will be lush and green. However this is only a temporary fix. To have a strong plant you need a strong root system and that means allowing the leaves (blades of grass) to grow and photosynthesise thus benefiting the root system.
Cutting the grass higher than normal will eliminate the competition from mosses and broad leaved weeds, a little like ground cover plants do in a bed of flowers.
